saturday spotlight - an "egg"celent artist

Originally, I started this blog to enable my friends and family to hold me accountable in attaining my goal of making all my kids' Christmas presents for Christmas 2010.  However, I've been pleasantly surprised to discover that other people have stumbled upon this little blog . . . people I'm not related to, friends with or vaguely acquainted with on Facebook.  Whenever new people sign up to follow Twelve Crafts or random people leave comments, I typically head on over to their blogs to check out what they are working on.  I'm always inspired and amazed at the creativity of others . . . people who have more creativity in their front right tooth than I have in my entire being.

So . . . this week I'm shining my spotlight on Katy of Katy Egg Design.  She is an amazing artist.  This week she posted a subtle and beautiful egg on her blog that I really liked.  I've also included a few of my other favorites.

Check out her blog and website, be inspired and . . .

saturday spotlight - lg imagery

A picture is worth a thousand words.

There's some debate about the origin of this phrase, but whether it was first coined by Fred Barnard, Confucius, Ivan Turgenev or someone by another name, its truth isn't diminished.  I've always wanted to be able to speak with a camera, but for some reason the images I capture through my lens say one word . . . maybe five . . . but definitely not a thousand.  Someday I will finally commit myself to taking a photography class.

I have a friend whose pictures have much to say . . . about joy, time, life, love  hope, promise, the future and so much more.  That's why this Saturday I'm stepping outside the typical craft bubble and shining the spotlight on an incredible photographer, Lana Greving.  She shot these two pics one day while my girls were visiting her house.  This wasn't an intentional photo session, but I love the pictures she took while the kids were just playing outside.

Check out more of her wordless essays by looking around on her website for LG Imagery.  Be inspired and . . .

saturday spotlight - beautiful bags

I'm not a "purse-person".  By that I mean, I'm not a person who switches purses based on outfit or outing.  I simply put my stuff in a purse (usually a really BIG purse), and I carry that particular purse around until it wears out or the contents of an entire sippy cup of milk get dumped into it.  Sadly, this has been the fate of quite a few purses.  You would think I would have learned to be more vigilant.

Although I am not a purse person, I have been tempted to start collecting and hoarding purses by my friend Liz who, like me, recently began sewing.  Liz has taken to sewing like a duck takes to water or a dog takes to fire hydrants.  (Liz please don't be offended that I'm comparing you to ducks and dogs.)  She's been sewing for three months, and she makes beautiful bags and purses.  So . . . this Saturday I'm shining my spotlight on Liz - mom, wife, friend, BBQ competitor, beginning sewer, purse person . . .

i'll show you mine if you show me yours . . .

I'm talking about crafts and creations of course.  Get your mind out of the gutter. :)  I've been showing you mine for three months now, and once a week in my Saturday Spotlight post I want you to show me yours.  So . . . take a picture of your latest craft/creation or one you've done in the past and really like.  Then send that picture my way via e-mail - lizbeth694@aol.com - so I can show off your project on an upcoming Saturday Spotlight as a source of inspiration to others.

Check out some past Saturday Spotlights and see that pretty much anything you can make can be a source of inspiration.

saturday spotlight - over 400 dolls and one inspirational woman

Today's Saturday Spotlight was a tough one . . . because there are soooo many people/projects I wanted to highlight this week.  But as I was trying to decide, Sarah posted this exciting update on her blog, Dolly Donations:

"With over 400 dolls in New York, I am happy to announce that we have Officially Completed The Abundant Ground Orphanage Doll Drive!
I would like to thank each and every one of you for sharing your talent, love and compassion with the children of the Abundant Ground Orphanage in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti, through the beautiful dolls you have made."

You might remember that some friends and I gathered a few weeks ago to add some dolls to the donation total.  We sent off 18 dolls over the course of a couple of weeks (and we have about six left to finish for the next dolly drive).  Through Sarah's inspirational cause over 400 dolls were made and sent to children in Haiti.  If this is the first time you've heard of Sarah and Dolly Donations, be sure to become a follower of her blog so that you can become a part of the next dolly drive.

saturday spotlight - rolling pins aren't just for baking

This is a first for Saturday spotlight . . . I'm highlighting the craftiness of someone I don't know.  Although I didn't plan it, my posts this week had a common theme.  See if you can guess the theme.  On Monday, the girls and I used toilet paper rolls to make rain sticks and binoculars.  And on Thursday, I finally made a craft for myself, a friend and a giveaway - a travel roll-up.

Yep, that's right.  Both posts find their common bond it some kind of roll.  I felt compelled to use my Saturday spotlight to continue the theme, and I found this amazing idea Amy at Craft Chi for making a unique print with a rolling pin.  Super creative!  Actually, I plan on trying this tomorrow night for our kids' craft night.  I'm going to make it a bit simpler for kids to do by using foam stickers that we have on hand.  I look forward to posting about our attempts tomorrow night.  Stay tuned and . . .

saturday spotlight - a house full of blessings in wood form

It's amazing how much I take for granted the things I see every day.  For a while I had an opportunity to live in London.  I worked in a mental health facility there, and five days a week on my way to work I walked through the courtyard of St. Paul's Cathedral.  Saint Paul's has been an important part of London's landscape since 1697.  On my first day to work, I remember thinking, "Wow, I can't believe I walk through the courtyard of this amazing building on my way to work!"  I gazed longingly at each and every detail - soaking it all in.  By month three of walking through that courtyard two times a day, five days a week, I barely even looked up - as if I was walking past a newspaper stand.  The once-beauty of this amazing cathedral had become commonplace.

That brings me to this week's Saturday Spotlight.  First, let me say I don't dare propose that my house is anything like St. Paul's Cathedral in historical significance and architectural beauty.  However, there are many things that sit inside these walls that - at one time - I gazed longingly at, soaking in each and every detail.  Things that people  made just for me or members of my family...things made out of wood by the careful and creative hand of friends, family, loved ones.  At some point, these beautiful gifts became commonplace.  However, in honor of wood crafts week I've shaken myself out of this commonplace stupor, and looked once again at the beauty inside these walls.

The headboard and dresser were made by my grandpa many many years ago.  This bedroom set has been used by my grandparents, my dad, my uncle, me and now my daughter.  This is a true legacy gift.
These two bookshelves were made for my girls.  They have unique names with special meanings, and these personalized bookshelves are wonderful gifts and beautiful additions to their rooms.  The women who made these has got major talent and skill.
This rocking horse is so special to us - it could never be commonplace.  It was made by a special family that plays an important part of our lives on a daily basis.  Each family member played a role - wood working, sanding, painting, staining, etc.  Mark, the man who did the wood work, was incredibly talented.  His hands were inspired.  He passed away, but his memory lives with us in this special gift.
This wonderful little chair is another one of those gifts that we cherish because of the person it represents and reminds us of - Ray.  We actually have a couple of gifts from Ray - a nativity, a sled, this chair - that help us remember a man who loved to use his creative gifts to bless others.

saturday spotlight - shining on sarah

After a break from Saturday Spotlight last week, I'm super excited to shine this week's spotlight on a friend of mine from college, Sarah.  Sarah is a busy mom of a super cute three year old who fits in a craft here and there when time allows.  She hooked up with my blog through Facebook, and she crafted her own crayon roll a month or so ago that I'm so excited to share with you because I think it's beautiful.  Check it out, and if her crayon roll inspires you to make one refer back to my blogs from January for links to a few different tutorial options.

This week's Saturday Spotlight is a "two-fer" because Sarah also just finished up an absolutley adorable little clothspin doll that I have to share with you.  I have to admit that this doll looks a bit daunting to me, so I have to give Sarah a huge round of applause for taking on this task - especially since she had a set of three-year-old hands helping her all along the way.  You too can follow in Sarah's crafty footsteps by checking out the tutorial for this little doll at Going Sew Crazy.
If you, like Sarah, have recently tried your hand at a craft, please drop me an e-mail at lizbeth694@aol.com and let me know.  I would love to show off your handiwork on a Saturday Spotlight in the future.  Thank you, Sarah, for letting me show off your work this week, and thank you for inspiring me to try something new and . . .

saturday spotlight - sixteen dames make dolls

About two weeks ago I posted about Dolly Donations (click to read Feb. 9 post) started by Sarah Hanson.  I was so inspired by Sarah that I wanted to make a few dolls to donate.  Sarah provides a free, easy peasy pattern to make donating a doll relatively simple for even the most novice sewers - like me.

After talking with a friend of mine (Thanks Carrie!), I realized that making two dolls is good, but a group of people working together could make even more.  A week ago my goal was to gather a handful of people to cut, sew, turn, stuff and paint, so I sent out a few e-mails to invite a handful of friends to bring any supplies they have and come sew with me.  In my initial invite I welcomed people to bring a friend . . . the more the merrier.  Imagine my elation when sixteen people showed up with mountains of supplies - fabric scraps, sewing machines, felt, needles and thread, stuffing, paint and painting supplies, scissors and so much more.  Carrie, Lori K., Ruth, Lana, Maggie, Terri, Gladys, Gretch, Star, Kathy, Jackie, Madison, Amy, Lori W., Patricia and I began cutting around 6:45, and a little over two hours later we had replaced the mountain of supplies with a mountain of dolls. (Well, actually we still had mountains of supplies because people were so generous with what they brought to donate.)

So this Saturday I'm shining the spotlight on these great gals who used their Friday night, their supplies and their talent to put together dolls for children in an orphanage in Haiti.

If you are inspired by them (and who wouldn't be), you can go to my previous post about Dolly Donations and follow the links to Sarah's blog, pattern and shipping info.  Also, we had such a good time together that we will be doing this again.  if you are in the area and interested in joining us, please let me know.  You can post a comment that you're interested or e-mail me.

Be inspired and . . .

saturday spotlight - luke's got skills

This Saturday I'm shining my spotlight on Luke.  Luke is incredibly talented with all things wood.  Truth be told, his entire family is oozing with talent - photography, crafting, sewing, woodworking, graphic design, sign making.  You name it.  They can make.  I don't really need to say much about Luke.  These pictures from his blog pretty much speak for themselves.  You can check out more of his work by clicking on one of the links below.  And you can find his e-mail on his blogs if you are interested in Luke making a custom item for you, or you can click on the final link to find items listed for sale.  Luke was recently featured in a local Omaha magazine.  Check it out at on pages 30 & 31.

saturday spotlight - let's eat cake!

I'm a big believer in the fact that crafting takes many forms . . . whether it's cute clothes for a dancing chicken, a beautifully reupholstered chair or a cleverly decorated cake.  That's why this week I'm shining the spotlight on my friend Jennifer Probst who owns JK Country Bakery with her husband, Keith.  Jennifer is an incredibly talented baker.  Everything she makes tastes d-e-licious!  I'm a super big fan of her monster bars, apple pie and pumpkin cookies.  I'm not ashamed to say that I could eat an entire plate of her monster bars in one day.  (Okay, I'm a little ashamed to say that, but they are THAT good!)  Jennifer made this pirate ship cake, and I think it looks almost too good to eat.  Although . . . I bet the little boy whose birthday it was for had no trouble digging into it.

Here are some of her other cute creations.

If you live in the area and have a need for a sweet treat, give Jennifer a call at 712-756-4462 or you can check her bakery page out on Facebook.  (Don't worry I don't just post people's phone numbers on the internet for every nutcase to see - not that anyone who reads this blog is a nutcase.  Jennifer gave me permission to toot her horn a bit and post her contact info.  Thanks so much Jennifer!)

I'm using Jennifer's inspirational cakes to craft my own cake-creation this weekend for my youngest daughter's second birthday.  What will you be inspired to create?

saturday spotlight - mara's chair goes from drab to fab

This weekend I'm shining the spotlight on a true inspiration.  In fact, watching Mara transform this dilapidated old chair from drab to fab, inspired me over the course of the last year in my meager sewing attempts (i.e. the aprons, potholders, bean bags).  Mara and I became friends eight years ago, and she has always had a good eye and artistic/creative flare.  However, she decided to try her hand at something completely different, and she enrolled in a class to learn how to upohlster a chair.

She took this chair on a journey of destruction to recreation.  She did an absolutely amazing job!

The finished product - a stunning chair!
