Pretend and Play Diaper Bag
**Goes with matching doll bassinet carrier**
Here's what you need:
1 - 30 x 9 inch piece of fabric for the outside of the diaper bag
1 - 30 x 9 inch pieces of fabric for the inside lining of the diaper bag
1 - 30 x 9 inch pieces of quilt batting for the diaper bag
1 - 16 x 11 1/2 inch piece of fabric for the flap
1 - 8 x 11 1/2 inch piece of interfacing
1 - 28 x 4 1/2 inch piece of fabric for the strap
**I also used two extra squares for a pocket
Here's what you do:
1) Pin batting to wrong side of outside of the bag.
2) Sew long straight lines every inch down the 9 inch side. In other words, you will be sewing eight long straight lines all the way down the 30 inches of the fabric piece. (I must confess that I'm THE WORST at sewing straight lines, so I used an fade-away fabric pen that disappears after a few hours to draw straight lines on the fabric . . . LOVE IT!)
3) Fold in half right sides together so that you have a 15 x 9 inch piece. Pin. Sew along three sides leaving one long side open.
4) At one corner seam, fold piece inward so that the right sides of one of the short-sided seams and the long-sided seam touch. Pin. Measure from corner about 1 1/2 inches. Sew. Cut off corner end.
5) Do the same thing with the other corner.
6) Now, pin and sew a seam seams on each side of the bottom of the bag to create a boxy bottom.
7) Do steps 3 through 6 with the lining piece. Except when sewing around the three sides in step 3, leave a three inch opening for turning later. (See second picture down.)
8) Take 4 1/2 x 28 inch piece for strap and fold in half length-wise right sides together. Sew down to form a tube. Turn and top stitch on both long sides.
9) Pin strap to inside of quilted part of the bag.
10) Take interfacing and fuse to wrong side of one half of the flap piece of fabric. (I also added a pocket after adding interfacing.)
11) Fold flap piece in half right sides together. Sew around leaving two inch opening for turning. Trim corners, turn and top stitch around closing up opening to turn as you go.
13) Insert lining so that right sides are together. Pin. Sew around edge.
14) Turn using turning hole in lining. Sew up opening. Stuff lining into bag.
15) Pin around top edge. Top stitch around edge.
Done!
Coming soon . . . diapers and other fun accessories.
Craft on!

Wow!! that's dedication to make something so nice for "pretend"!
Very cute! Some little girl will enjoy playing mommy!
Oh goodness! That is so cute! I thought it was a big messenger bag when I saw the picture at first. I want one!! Without the bottle though. ;)
that is cute, you are so good with that sewing machine but you gave really good instructions that are easy to follow.
oh my, you keep adding to my list of "nice to do" LOL. Great bag. thanks
super cute - thanks for the tutorial!
Wow! Super cute!! You seriously need to stop this, my list of things to make for my girls keeps growing because of you! :)
My mama made dolly diaper bags for me, and now I love doing the same for the little girls in my life. Such a fun design!
Wow, I love this so much! Maybe I can make one for me... I don't think anyone would know that it's meant to be a child's play-pretend toy... :)
holy moly.... this is super cute but super ambitious! you're so talented!
:)

Adorable!! I'm going to have to make one for my little girl.
I LOVE that fabric! So much so that I bought some to put in my daughter's room as decoration and used for inspiration for a growth chart.
I love this so much! Thank you for posting this. I am making a messenger bag for myself, only I didn't know it was going to BE a messenger bag until I already had the sides and lining cut out. Since it's patchwork as well as quilted, I didn't want to scrap it, but I couldn't picture how it would look with the flap added instead of all one piece like I normally do them...anyway, thanks for the clear instructions and the great pictures. I appreciate it a ton!
Oh, WOW! A little bitty dolly-sized diaper bag! I love it!!

I just made this today. Love how fast it came together, and how well it looks! I hand stitched the lining inside the bottom corners, to help keep it inside, otherwise my daughter would keep coming to me asking me to "fix it!" :)
Thanks for the great tutorials. Working on the other baby dolls things as well! Can't wait to see my girl's face at Christmas.

Hi there! This is a beautiful little diaper bag, and thank you so much for the tutorial - I am actually making to of these for my girls at this very moment. I have a question, and I hope you check in on your comments - I don't quite understand step 6. What are you pinning, and how do you create the boxy bottom? Thanks again!:)
Thank you so much for your tutorial and for your help with my question! I made two of these and blogged about them here: http://www.connectingthedots.dk/2011/06/05/tutorial-mania/
Thanks for this pretend diaper bag tutorial. I am going to link to it as an idea for a gift bag at a sibling baby shower.
I used your tutorial last night to make a diaper bag for play for a little girl I know. I made this project in about 3 hours and it turned out FAN-tastic! And the little girl LOVES it! I then was able to make it again this afternoon from memory and a little bigger for my son for a messenger bag and, again, was sooo easy to make! I think I might have saved a 1/2 hours time today since I had already had some practice. Thanks so much for this tutorial!
